Personal and Business Financial Planning Checklists for the Fall

September 12, 2013, re-published November 3, 2014

By: J. Andre Weisbrod

Now that we are into September, we should be thinking about what we need or want to accomplish by year-end.  These lists are not meant to cover everything, but they are a good place to start.  (Note: Please register as a free member to receive alerts about future valuable blog posts and to access certain content, including the free use of many valuable tools.)

Personal Planning

__ Project Third Quarter Budget

__ Forecast Year Totals

__ Talk to Accountant about Third Quarter Tax Reduction Strategies and make sure Estimated Taxes are accurately calculated and paid

__ Talk to your Financial Planner and Investment Advisor regarding year-end strategies and positioning.  Plan for any withdrawals needed over the next 12-18 months.   Also review insurance plans, especially health insurance.  If you provide your own health insurance, talk to your agent about how Obamacare is going to affect you and what changes you should make.  If you have an employer-sponsored plan, talk to your employer about the company’s plans.

__ Review your investment portfolio for capital gains and losses.  If you have realized gains, look to see if you can "harvest" any positions that have losses to offset the gains.  Note that mutual funds often distribute gains toward the end of the year.

__ Plan Christmas Gift List – start looking for bargains now and make sure savings for gifts is adequate to avoid a large year-end credit card debt.

__ Select Christmas Cards and Plan Send Dates

If you are a Senior

__ Check on your Medicare coverage.  Review with your agent your options and choose what's best for you.  Open Enrollment is October 15-December 17.

__ If you are age 70.5 this year or older, plan your Required Minimum Distribution from your Traditional IRA or other qualified retirement plans.

Business Planning

__ Make Master To-Do List – Marketing Tasks, Staff Concerns, etc.  Prioritize and Delegate

__ Project Third Quarter Budget (anticipate what you want to do regarding bonuses, retirement plan contributions, new hires, etc. as well as 2014 increases in costs, including health care plans for which you might want to set aside some reserves)

__ Forecast Year Totals

__ Review your Business Plan and begin to make specific goals and plans for 2014.

__ Share goal list and share with employees.  Get feedback and suggestions.  Listen.

__ Talk to Accountant about Third Quarter Strategies

__ Firm up your Health Insurance plans.  Talk to your insurance professional now.  The Affordable Care Act needs to be considered by everyone even if you do not have to change anything.

__ Check and evaluate your Web Site to make sure all functionality and links are correct.

__ Check your email systems.

__ Check your Social Media practices and evaluate.

__ Make sure all 1099 information is up to date.

__ Make a list of all the good accomplished in 2013.  This can be shared at the Christmas party as a morale enhancer.

__Have employees make lists of their 2014 goals.

__ Plan Third Quarter Meetings, Holiday Events

__ Select Christmas Cards and Plan Send Dates

__ Plan Christmas Gifts
